17 May marks the anniversary of the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the creation of the International Telecommunication Union.
World Telecommunication Day has been celebrated annually on 17 May since 1969, marking the founding of ITU and the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865. It was instituted by the Plenipotentiary Conference in Malaga-Torremolinos in 1973.

Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) have long been recognized by the United Nations as essential tools for socio-economic development. Similarly, Ethiopia recognizes the important and key role that ICT plays for delivering a rich set of Citizen Services that in turn contribute to sustainable development, and make breakthrough progress towards building an Information Society.
The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT), in collaboration with ICT Center of Excellence, ICT-ET, EITPA is organizing a major conference with a theme of “ICT: a Gateway for Growth & Transformation”. This “ICT Ethiopia Conference” 2012 which is scheduled on June 08, 2012 will be held in parallel with the 5th ICT Exhibition, scheduled for June 06 to June 10, 2012, in Addis Ababa Ethiopia.

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology(MCIT), the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia signed Letter of Intent “LoI” on Wednesday 18th of January 2012, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
This Letter of Intent (LoI) between the two Ministries was signed by H.E Dr. Mohamed Salem, Minister of Communications and Information Technology of the Arab Republic of Egypt, and by H.E Dr. Debretsion G/Michael, Minister of Communications and Information Technology of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
International Telecommunication Union (ITU) donates Assistive Technology for use by Persons with Disabilities in Ethiopia
On January 17, 2011 the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) represented by the Regional Director for Africa, Mr. Andrew Rugegeon, handed-over various types off assistive technology items to H.E. Dr. Debretsion G/Michael, Minister of Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT) at the head quarter of the MCIT.
In his speech, Mr. Andrew Rugegeon, thanked the MCIT for giving ITU the opportunity to support the government efforts in extending ICTs to persons with disabilities in line with the ITU mandate and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with disability to which Ethiopia is a signatory. Furthermore, he said: “… as Lao-tzu, the Chinese philosopher remarked, ‘the journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step’. You have successfully taken this step and you are on your way to reach your ultimate goal of making all ICT centers fully accessible to persons with disabilities in Ethiopia. The ITU will accompany you to realize this vision within its possible means and wishes you all the best in this noble endeavor.”

Ethiopian Airlines Refutes ET 409 Crash Report
Addis Ababa: January 17, 2012: Ethiopian Airlines strongly refutes the final investigation report released today by the Lebanese Ministry of Public Works and Transport on the accident of ET 409 / 25 January 2010.
The Airline maintained that the Lebanese Government had been speculating the cause of the accident as pilot error right from the day of the accident contrary to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex 13.
Mr Tewolde Gebremariam, Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines stated: “We are not surprised that the investigation process in the last couple of years was used only to justify the speculation made publicly before the beginning of the investigation process. To this effect, the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority has appended its comments to the report and expressed its regrets and disagreement both in the investigation process and the final report. ”

As part of the government’s effort to promote ICT, MCIT has organized ICT Exhibition and Conference for the fourth time. The Exhibition was organized with an objective of increasing the level of ICT awareness at the grass root level, and promote its implications to national growth. It has brought multi-stakeholders together to share knowledge, experiences and encourage partnership through discussing various current side issues of the sector in light of promoting the position of the sector amongst the major policy makers, international bodies, developmental investors, academia, research institutes, development partners and relevant governmental and non-governmental organizations; with a view of achieving a coordinated effort amongst them towards the realization of the sector’s growth potentials and its contribution to the success of the new growth and transformation plan of the country.

The event includes a conference program, exhibition networking and private business meetings which encourage debate, discussion and facilitate very high level business decisions.

His Excellency Mr.Peter Gatkuoth Gey, state minister of MCIT and Mr. Tariq H Malik, Extensia’s CEO, have given the press conference on August 11, 2011. On the media briefing, His Excellency Mr. Peter emphasized the need to conduct an event of such kind which will bring together the international technology companies and policy makers in the sector so that Ethiopia will benefit more from attracting international ICT investors which is of paramount importance for maximizing the flow of Foreign Direct Investment (FDIs) into Ethiopia.
The state minister also explains as targeted goals have been set by the sector on the Growth and Transformation plan /GTP/, this summit is expected to play its own role in showing the government’s commitment and interest to work with the international technology Innovators which will accelerate the ICT development initiatives being undertaken nationally, and thereby fulfilling the expected result to be realized within the coming few years.

Mr. Tariq H Malik, on his part said that due to the impressive developments taking place in Ethiopia, extesia was pleased with MCIT’s decision to host the 10th anniversary of this auspicious summit. “Ethiopia has made great headways on the development of communications, bridging the digital divided and reaching out to the rural areas,” Mr.Malik added. He continues to say that we are grateful for the support of the ICT –ET association and honored by the strong endorsement and partnership with the Ministry of communication and information technology of Ethiopia.
MCIT and Extensia intend to also promote the Addis Ababa IT- Park to global technology companies at the summit.
The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT) of the Federal Democratic republic of Ethiopia has organized an international conference on ICT investment opportunities in Ethiopia; Diaspora Dialogue on January 12/2012 in the presence of H.E Dr Deberetsiyon G/Michael Minister of Ministry of Communication and Information Technology.
The Conference was elapsed for half a day which is presented in person and web conference from USA, Canada, England and Australia. Among the presenters were Fitsum Andargue (PMP), focused on outsourcing opportunities for Ethiopia, and Seyoum Bereded presented on technology innovation series, Mentorship program and pubic/private sector forum. It was also added by Nebiyou yoseph(GA)which he gave priority on how to optimize data centers in Ethiopia and by Kidane Haile(CA) on its part has presented on the optimization of incubation in Ethiopia.
